Strong August Jobs Data Puts Rate Hike in Focus
On Friday, September 4th, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the US economy added 162,000 jobs in the month of August. This number was well above economists’ estimates of 53,000 jobs. The report marked a sharp turnaround after the labor market appeared to be cooling in the early summer. This data, coupled with the fact that inflation is still running much higher than the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, significantly increases the odds of a rate hike from the central bank next week.
Major Inflation Gauges Set to Release Later This Week
On Thursday and Friday of this week, two major measures of inflation will be released for August. The Producer Price Index (PPI) will be released on Thursday, and expectations are that it will move considerably month over month as energy costs continue to remain high for businesses throughout the economy. To follow the PPI on Friday is the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which economists expect to rise 0.4% from the end of July. If these two major measures of inflation come in hotter than expected, it will give the Federal Reserve an even stronger case for tightening monetary policy and raising interest rates.
