Inflation Accelerates to 3.7% In September, Increasing the Probability of a Rate Hike

On Wednesday, October 14th, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported inflation data for the month of September. Inflation came in hotter than expected, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising 0.6% in the month. Additionally, the annualized inflation rate rose to 3.7%. Higher gasoline prices were a major contributor to the headline increase, but price pressures showed up across several other categories as well. This inflation report makes it far more likely that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates again at its next FOMC meeting at the end of this month (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

US Retail Sales Beat Expectations as Consumer Spending Remains Resilient

The US Census Bureau reported retail sales data last Thursday, and September sales showed clear signs of consumer resilience. For the month, sales totaled $745 billion, up 0.8% from August. Sales were also up 6.3% since September of 2025. The retail sales data demonstrates continued consumer resilience despite high inflation and higher interest rates in the US economy. However, much of September’s retail sales growth was driven by higher gas prices, while the retail control group excluding automotive and gasoline only increased 0.2% (US Census Bureau).
